Chemistry and Toxicology Researcher

Interested in a non-profit job where you can use your technical skills to help others? Are you at home with chemistry, environmental and health sciences, writing, speaking, and collaborative research? The Environmental Working Group (EWG) seeks professionals to join an advocacy team in Washington, DC that delivers what the press has called “policy-rattling results.” Our team of scientists, engineers, policy experts, lawyers and computer programmers conducts original data-driven, science-based research focused on finding ways to help human health and the environment.

EWG seeks a bachelor’s level researcher from a science or engineering background with a commitment to the environment and a desire to carry out research that contributes to public health protection. Specific duties include:

DUTIES

  • Compile and analyze chemical toxicity data from toxicology, epidemiology, environmental science, and other relevant research fields and preparation of summary evaluations of chemicals’ safety profiles.
  • Work independently, but also contribute expertise to project teams.
  • Solve problems and conduct research related to the environment and public health.
  • Participate in the development of original studies – science and policy analyses – that inform consumers and educate policy makers and the media on our research.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A love for problem solving, research, writing, and working with others in a multidisciplinary, fast paced setting. At least a BS degree with a focus on environmental sciences, chemistry, or toxicology.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills.
  • Detail-oriented and meticulous approach to data analysis and presentation.
  • Comfortable with rapidly moving project timelines and willing to adapt to the evolving science and policy priorities of the organization.
  • The candidate should have strong skills in chemistry as well as a good background in toxicology or a readiness to quickly build up the necessary working skills in understanding the effects of chemicals on human health and the scientific process of toxicity assessment.
  • Preferred: Two or more years experience in related research for corporate, academic, government or non-profit organizations.

Location: Washington, D.C.

WEB DESIGNER

EWG seeks a web designer who is able to envision, source, and create high quality web graphics in a dynamic, fast-paced and interdisciplinary environment.

DUTIES

  • Build small and large web applications and sites using Drupal
  • Provide extensive use of graphic design capabilities to develop Web pages and sites that are visually appealing and interesting.
  • Day to day responsibilities will include: writing XHTML and CSS code, and working with jQuery, AJAX and PHP programming.
  • Create, adjust email marketing templates and landing pages.
  • Participate as a member of the web team and in office training programs
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced knowledge of web programming languages.
  • Experience designing high traffic web sites and user interfaces from scratch.
  • Strong knowledge of HTML/XHML XML, CSS, and JavaScript/jQuery technologies
  • Advanced Experience with Illustrator, PhotoShop, InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in web work.
  • 3+ years of experience with back-end Web technologies: PHP 5+, MySQL, Apache
  • 3+ Experience with open source content management systems such as Drupal and Wordpress.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and three years of professional experience in business or government. Professional or non-professional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
  • Must possess excellent organizational, communications and multi-tasking skills.
  • Understanding of website usability.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with an eye for detail and quality.
  • Envision, source, and create high quality graphics to be included on our existing web properties.
  • Print design experience and ability to translate brand and message and illustration and animation skills a plus.

Internships

Summer Term (mid/late May through August): Deadline March 31st - Unpaid

General Research

EWG's General Research Intern will work in a fast-paced environment, assisting the Research team to release the top-notch, cutting edge research projects for which EWG is recognized. They will provide research support on several projects including, among others, our ongoing Bottled Water project, our burgeoning Climate Change program, our first-of-its-kind Cosmetics Database.

The Research Intern will both see how a project develops from an idea to, in some cases, policy reform and get first-hand experience of the inner workings of a successful not-for-profit organization.

Project Description:

  • Perform literature reviews of scientific studies- synthesizing and summarizing findings;
  • Conduct research (online, phone) as necessary to find information on laboratories, companies, products, etc.;
  • Editing research documents
  • Work on databases.

Skills Required:

  • Preferred: Current Undergraduate students with an interest in science or public health fields.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Sense of initiative and diligence to independently pursue and complete research tasks.
  • Ability to pace work toward deadlines.
  • Familiarity with MS Excel and Internet research.


Government Affairs

EWG seeks a Government Affairs intern to help shape policy that will protect public health and the environment on a broad range of issues.

Issues include:

  • Toxics. Reforming chemical policy to ensure that chemicals are safe for children before they enter the market by strengthening the Toxic Substances Control Act, removing jet fuel from drinking water and hazardous chemicals from consumer products, and promoting safer alternatives.
  • Farm Bill. Passing a fair and equitable Farm Bill that achieves greater equity in the distribution of taxpayer benefits, significantly increases conservation funding to address unintended environmental impacts of agricultural production, and meaningfully addresses concerns about renewable energy, organic agriculture, crop insurance and disaster payments, and nutrition.
  • Natural Resources. Protecting Western public lands, including National Parks, Monuments and other areas that are currently threatened by significant increases in metal mining and natural gas drilling activity.
  • Energy Policy and Global Warming. Promoting renewable energy polices that ensure that we address our energy and global warming issues wisely. Areas that EWG has been active in include biofuels and nuclear power.

Description:

  • Research policy, legislative and regulatory issues.
  • Draft materials for dissemination to Congress and coalition partners.
  • Attend Capitol Hill hearings and events.
  • Disseminate EWG materials.
  • Support for legislative and Capitol Hill database.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in environmental, public health and governmental affairs issues preferred.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, and internet research.


Natural Resources

Environmental Working Group seeks an intern to help protect Western public lands from reckless oil and gas drilling and to promote agriculture and biofuels policies that safeguard water, soil and wildlife. Last year, our interns helped author a report on toxic oil and gas drilling chemicals that received coverage on National Public Radio among other outlets, wrote an op-ed piece that was published in two newspapers in upstate New York, attended Congressional hearings and drafted memos for Congressional staff. We anticipate another busy and rewarding internship this year.

EWG's intern will assist on several projects including a continued investigation of hydraulic fracturing, a natural gas and oil drilling technique that injects wells with up to eight million gallons of water, unknown toxic chemicals and sand in order to increase production. The intern will also contribute to our work on biofuels and farm policy that focuses in part on shifting away from corn ethanol and toward more sensible energy solutions.

Project description:

  • Performing researching and writing content for EWG's reports
  • Reaching out to legislative offices, media and citizens organizations.
  • Drafting letters-to-the-editor and op-ed pieces.
  • Attending Congressional hearings and meetings with Congressional staff.

  • An interest in environmental and energy issues is preferred.

Public Affairs/Media Support Intern

We are seeking a qualified individual to fill a part-time (20 hours), unpaid internship that will assist in creating and implementing a successful public affairs strategy. This internship will provide an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of media outreach in a non-profit by gaining knowledge about the unique strategy employed by our Public Affairs Department.

Public Affairs/Media Support:

  • Draft internal media reports to track the dissemination of EWG’s analyses through mainstream and independent outlets.
  • Summarize media coverage and compile reputable quotes citing EWG.
  • Manage physical media files.
  • Gather website, blog, and media statistics for our monitoring and tracking system.
  • Update press readers for all of EWG’s topics; set up new readers as needed.
  • Provide support as needed for EWG’s blog efforts.
  • Help identify appropriate media.

Skills Required:

  • Attention to detail.
  • Exceptional organization and writing skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Passion about environmental issues.

We are looking for college Junior/ Senior or graduate student with major in public relations, journalism or communications. You must be responsible, able to multitask, goal oriented and a team player with positive outlook on life.
